A CRITICAL POINT OF VIEW CONCERNING EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT AT UNAD

After reading all the materials shared and the contributions from all team members of this collaborative task I want to share a critical point of view concerning the implications of our plan from collaborative task 1 in the educational management of the institution.

First of all I want to say that I found quiet interesting to see that our country is very well structured on terms of theory and laws that benefit educational management. Each school has the autonomy to make decisions and changes in order to improve their educational quality and serve the students better.
It seems to me that what we are lacking in the institutions is the human factor, the people with the leadership necessary to face the changes of a global world.
I think many of the school administrator continue doing this job just because they have been there forever and not because they prove to make changes on the way schools are manage. Going back to one of the videos shared in one of the forums, a teacher or administrator can have all the studies and qualifications but if he/she does not have the leadership value to make decisions, to seek for innovation and make real changes; we end up continuing working under the same paradigms of a hundred years ago.

At UNAD I see that we are lacking a lot of innovations and good educational management because mistake seem to repeat over and over, semester after semester, no matter what the reality is.
The project presented from us on collaborative work 1, can be put in place easily at our institution because it does not demands a lot of monetary resources but of course, it demands management to take place.
Will it ever happen? will UNAD take the time to look into our proposals to seek for innovation and changes that are truly needed from students?
Is there good educational management at our school, or we are lacking, as many institutions do, the most important factor to lead to change: leadership!

A CRITICAL POINT OF VIEW CONCERNING THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE EXISTING EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT IN BACHELORS DEGREES AT UNAD

It seems that the freedom in the online environment, flexibility and lack of organization in some Bachelor programs offered by the University have derailed some students who were used to school's rigidly structured schedules and did not master time-management skills. It is common to see students often struggle to balance academic, personal and work commitments. Faced with so many competing demands on their time, many students have the dilemma to cheat or simply do something in a hurry just to comply with the demands and then let the situation take its course. Without intervention from an advisor, professor or parent, a student is unlikely to succeed as a professional much less as a teacher with all responsibility that it implies.
The poor academic performance of some students is to a great extent a consequence of poor educational management of the institution, with overly heavy tasks in some courses, in which students have to work too hard to complete them, and very little or no demand in others, in which activities have not been properly selected for their learning. Even there are some programmed activities throughout courses in which not even tutors know clearly what is necessary to do according to the guide since the activities have been created by another tutor who is the director of the course. So students attempt to cope, by doing whatever and having many interventions in forums without real and structured content, not only to ensure they do not fail the subject but also trying to maintain a high grade point average in order to meet graduation requirements and receive their university degree, which finally has become the most important.
The Institution must commit to a rigorous internal review program to ensure the effectiveness of the courses in terms of how well they are preparing students to meet certain professional standards in their future teaching practices. While it is true that having a degree is necessary to be hired as a teacher or to be promoted beyond a certain level, it is also true that getting a degree from an accredited University is absolutely essential if you hope to garner the career success you deserve.
In the case of Bachelor of English as a foreign language, it is said that it has some problems because it is a new program, precisely for being a new program, a more complete assessment of the courses must be undertaken, taking into account that the first graduates will be the representatives of the good or bad quality of it and when an institution loses its accreditation in the market, it is very difficult to recover it.
Effective teaching requires commitment, participation and collaboration of all actors involved. Teachers will form the central component of this process and they must be the subjects and not the objects of it. Student responsibility for their own learning is relevant to have a good learning process but it is also important to create a good learning climate which is in big part a responsibility of the directives by hiring committed and active participants in the process who are involved full-time in delivering the educational mission.
Motivation is the most important fact of learning. The best way to motivate learners in online learning is participating in forums, not only to say when the deadline is and threaten students about not receiving tasks after that date; it is through real feedback, suggestions and comments about different contributions. Another important way to motivate is through grading activities on time. Not having a grade after one or two months of having presented the activity make students feel bad and quite frustrated since by the time they finally see the feedback they do not even remember what the activity was and sometimes it seems the tutor has not even read it because he or she only follows the rubric and does not give any personal comment to the student that shows that he/she has really read the activity, which most of the time has been presented after long hours of work. Students with high motivation will have proper attitude and enthusiasm in their process getting better results. Students must find in a tutor or a teacher, someone who helps to develop problem-solving strategies and clarify concepts, providing meaningful learning opportunities.
Tutor behavior, motivation and management of different learning styles have highly effect in learning processes.

Critical point of view

Although technology in education is an open window to evolution and globalization, there is a constant inconvenient about its application in different fields for being more specific, in education; because in most of schools result very expensive to be at the vanguard.

But not only the financial resource is the problem, but also the training of staff to be able to guide and provide support to academic community.
It is necessary that government include more programs to train instructor who get in touch with students of all ages.

At UNAD university it is a good program and performance about use of technology, but a very serious item which concern to the humans is the personal contact with people not with machines, a computer is a dead object but a person feel and understand arguments that most of times result the most important when you prepare yourself for a permanent contact with community.

Technology in education is important but much more is the human training with an integral formation, and in this case UNAD make possible life's projects and reach people to get their dreams.

Critical point of view

In Latin America there are different strategies to improve education and competitiveness; that means that each country must respond to those requirements and search new tools to enhance the quality of education.
Colombia has been influenced by those strategies because it had to create new ways to control the teachers’ training, Higher Education and it developed other programs to learn English. It has more opportunities to be competitive in the worldwide but it is not enough with these tools. Colombian people need more opportunities to face the globalization requirements; for that, people need more English learning.
I think we as teachers and as students from UNAD can help in a simple and an effective way; with our proposal this university would provide to its students more help in their English learning process; we would enable new students to have an easier adaptation in the university and in our program English Teaching as a Foreign Language because we know the needs that they have and we know it very well.

I also believe that at UNAD and in our program there is a lack of good leadership because they do not have a lot of experience in this program; even if the structure of courses has changed there are still some problems to manage the quality of education.

THE SELECTED PLAN AND ITS POSITIVE IMPACT FOR THE STUDENTS

The selected plan consists on Synchronous encounters led by e-monitors which must be done on the first English courses of B.A. PROGRAM OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE at UNAD.
POSITIVE IMPACT FOR THE STUDENTS AND THEREFORE FOR THE GOOD INSTITUTIONAL IMAGE
It will help students at UNAD to improve their English language skills since the beginning of their career, especially to students that do not have a good level in English at the time of starting
· It will give the undergraduates enough knowledge to face intermediate and advanced courses since the encounters will prepare them to face challenging studying environments.
· Hiring some e-monitors to support students of BA program of English as a foreign language will lead to get better results in the academic processes especially in communicative competences
· Synchronous encounters will lead students to a better performance in classes as well as for their future working environment.
· Students will develop communicative competence in simple and routinely situations by engaging in a range of speaking activities
· Students will get a positive attitude towards English language and become enthusiastic and reflective in their participation in forums
