First of all, it is important to say that Latin American education is very poor in relation with other regions around the world because there are not a lot of resources or some governors do not want to invest in education.
If Latin America wants to compete successfully in global markets it has to improve the quality of education because good education enhance workers’ skills and reduce poverty. Latin America neglects its education systems because it does not improve learning and there are a lot of inequalities between rich and poor citizens. It is known that Latin America is the most unequal region in the world and that in our schools there is a poor job and learners do not receive the necessary skills to be competitive. People do not have the necessary level in math, science, technology and English skills, that is why we do not attract foreign investment and we cannot innovate a lot. Then, it is necessary to talk about Latin American Education progress since some years ago. There are some necessary pillars to be competitive; one of them is a about the quality of primary education because if children have good educational basis they can have more opportunities in their adulthood; another one is about higher education because if young people can accede to higher education they will have a better preparation before starting their professional life; another one is innovation because it has the power to help the country to create and develop new knowledge. Latin America is in the process to respond to these pillars and to improve the quality of education for children and for young people. Levels of education are rising, investment in education is increasing and it search different ways to make education more effective in order to improve competitiveness. Latin America has new ways to monitor the quality of tertiary education through accreditation; in each country there are some agencies to control the quality of education; they evaluate higher education programs using and student assessment. There are also new programs to promote English in Latin America, new strategies for teachers’ training and for evaluating teacher performance.
These tools allow each American country to be able to respond to the globalization requirements and to be more competitive around the world.
